Black Mountain, North Carolina
Black Mountain is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,426 at the 2020 United States census. It is part of the Asheville metropolitan area. The town is named for the old train stop at the Black Mountain Depot and is located at the southern end of the Black Mountain range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Southern Appalachians. History Black Mountain in its present form was incorporated on March 4, 1893. The first recorded inhabitants of the area were the Cherokee. A road was built through the area in 1850 and a railroad followed in 1879. Black Mountain College was a Private college, private Liberal arts colleges in the United States, liberal arts college in Black Mountain, North Carolina. It was founded in 1933 by John Andrew Rice, Theodore Dreier, and several others. The college was ideologically organized around John Dewey's educational philosophy, which emphasized holistic learning and the study of art as central to a Liberal arts, liberal arts education. WCIV (channel 36) is a television station in Charleston, South Carolina, United States, affiliated with MyNetworkTV and ABC. The station is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, and maintains studios on Allbritton Boulevard along US 17/701 (Johnnie Dodds Boulevard) in Mount Pleasant and a transmitter in Awendaw, South Carolina. In September 2014, due to complications arising from Sinclair's acquisition of the original WCIV (channel 4) from its previous owner, Allbritton Communications, WCIV's programming and ABC affiliation was moved onto the second digital subchannel of Sinclair's existing station in the market, MyNetworkTV affiliate WMMP. Monte Vista Hotel is a historic hotel building located at Black Mountain, Buncombe County, North Carolina. It was built in 1937, and is a three-story, L-shaped Colonial Revival style brick building with a hipped roof. A six-room, one-story addition was built about 1940 that connects, by an enclosed breezeway, to a 16-room, one-story, L-shaped annex added in 1980. Intheoaks, also known as In-the-oaks, is a historic estate and a national historic district located at Black Mountain, Buncombe County, North Carolina. The district encompasses nine contributing buildings, two contributing sites, seven contributing structures, and four contributing objects associated with a country estate of the 1920s. The main house was built in 1921–1923, and is a four-level, U-shaped Tudor country manor house with an oblique wing. It was designed by New York architect Frank E. Wallis, with a large recreation wing containing a ballroom, gymnasium, bowling alley, and indoor swimming pool designed by architect Richard Sharp Smith.
